Presidents Through Civil War and Reconstruction.
Abraham Lincoln 1861-1865
Abraham Lincoln was the the 16th president of the United States. He was born on February 12th 1809. Lincoln stood for a a lot. He wanted the abolishment of slavery and the unity of his country. He worked very hard. When Lincoln came to office and put out the Idea of freeing the slaves the southern states were not at all happy with the decision. They then tried to break away causing the USA to break into war. He was the man in charge of the Emancipation Proclamation. I personally think Lincoln was the Best thing to ever happen to America. All was going to work smooth. After the Civil War Lincoln made a reconstruction plan. That was until he was assassinated on April 15th 1865. He was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth.
Andrew Johnson 1865-1869
Andrew Johnson was America's 17th president. He took office after the assassination of Lincoln. Johnson was born December 29th 1808. Growing up he was a slave owner and was able to sympathize with the southerners. After he took office he was very flexible with the south. The Radical Republicans were no okay with that so they did what they could. Johnson did not stand a chance when put up to the Radical Republicans. They eventually lead to him being Impeached in 1869.
Ulysses S. Grant 1869-1877
Ulysses S. Grant (General Grant) was born April 27th 1877. Grant was a Union Commander during the Civil war. He was the 18th president and making a long story short he was the cherry to the pie of reconstruction. He worked with the Union to make America something to be proud of. He worked to fight against the KKK and work to make the civil rights for African Americans as strong as he could. Grant was the stabilizer of reconstruction. Granted he did have somewhat of an outline to go by from Lincoln and Johnson, but he handled it nicely. Grant past away on July 23rd 1885 at age 63 for an Unknown cause.
